In the central part of the coin – remnants of the ducal palatine and the chapel in Ostrów Lednicki. Above it – image of the Byzantine staurotheke (cross-shaped reliquary for the wood from the Holy Cross) covered with selective gilding. Along the rim – the name of the coin: RELIKTY BUDOWLI PAŁACOWO-SAKRALNEJ NA OSTROWIE LEDNICKIM (Relics of the Palace and Religious Complex in Ostrów Lednicki).

The obverse depicts a floor plan of the ducal palatine and the chapel in Ostrów Lednicki next to the spatial model of the complex. In the upper part of the coin – image of the coat of arms eagle established as the national emblem of the Republic of Poland. Below it – mint mark: m/w. Right hand, on a separate matt surface – year of issue: 2015. Below it – horizontal inscriptions: RZECZPOSPOLITA/POLSKA (the Republic of Poland). In the bottom part of the coin, next to the rim – face value: 20 ZŁ.

Relics of the palace and religious complex in Ostrów Lednicki

Ostrów Lednicki – the biggest island on Lake Lednica – is the most significant location associated with the historical origins of the Polish state. From the second half of the tenth century to the first half of the eleventh century it hosted an extensive residential and political centre of the first Polish rulers: Mieszko I, Bolesław the Brave and Mieszko II. Within the fortified settlement, originally surrounded with very high walls, there are relics of the palatial buildings and the chapel with baptismal fonts, which have been preserved to the present times.
