In the central upper of the coin – main hall of the university library at the Dobra str. Right-hand – open book with an inscription ‘HINC OMNIA’, hanging above the main entrance to the university library. Left-hand – emblem of the university. Along the rim, on a separate surface – name of the coin in Polish: 200. ROCZNICA UTWORZENIA UNIWERSYTETU WARSZAWSKIEGO (200th Anniversary of the Establishment of the University of Warsaw).

In the central part of the coin – logotype of the jubilee accompanied by the motto of the anniversary: Dwa stulecia/Dobry początek (Two centuries/Good beginning). Below the motto, on a matt surface – face value: 10 zł. In the upper part of the coin – image of an eagle established as the national emblem of the Republic of Poland, dividing into two parts the face value: 200/ZŁ. Below the left talon of the eagle (heraldically) – mint mark: m/w. In the upper part of the coin, along the rim – inscriptions separated by a decorative dot: RZECZPOSPOLITA POLSKA (issuing country), 2016 (year of issue).

200th Anniversary of the Establishment of the University of Warsaw

In 2016, the University of Warsaw celebrates its 200th anniversary. Established by the foundation act of Alexander I, Tsar of Russia and King of Poland, on 19th November 1816, it was launched in 1818 as the Royal University of Warsaw. It was led by the General Council headed by Stanisław Staszic. The emblem of the University was a white eagle with a crown, with its wings spread, holding laurel and palm branches in its talons, and surrounded by five stars representing the five faculties: Law, Medicine, Philosophy, Theology, and Sciences and Fine Arts. After the defeat of the November Uprising, the University was closed and valuable collections were taken to St. Petersburg.
