Jan Matejko

"He was the one who showed in front of the baffled eyes of the Polish nation a phantom of its conscience, its suffering, dreams, glory, power, crime and collapse, the phantom so real, so wonderfully present which can not be annihilated by time" - these words characterise the meaning of Matejko's work.
