On the right, a stylised image of the obverse of the denarius of Boleslaw the Bold with a stylised image of the bust of the king in a royal crown, and a sword in a hand. On the left, on a separate surface, at the bottom, a stylised building in the Roman style. Along the rim, an inscription: DENAR BOLESŁAWA II ŚMIAŁEGO (Denarius of Boleslaw II the Bold).

At the bottom, on the left, in an isolated area in the form of a circle: an image of the Eagle established as the state emblem of the Republic of Poland, along the rim, an inscription: RZECZPOSPOLITA POLSKA (Republic of Poland), and following a separating dot, the notation of the year of issue: 2013, below the Eagle, an inscription: 5 ZŁ. Under the Eagle, on the right, the Mint’s mark: M/W. On the right, a stylised image of a building with three towers, each completed with a round copula. On the left – a stylised fragment of a plaiting in the Roman style.

History of Polish Coin – Denarius of Boleslaw II the Bold

At the final period of Boleslaw I the Brave’s rule, Polish coins ceased to be struck. It was only half a century later when his great-grandson – Boleslaw II the Bold – started to mint new coins. The latter ruler did not, however, stick to the mintage habits of his great forefather. While previously several types of coins had been struck in small volumes, under Boleslaw II the Bold only two basic types of coins were issued. The first of them (type 1) appeared when Boleslaw ruled yet as a prince. The second one (type 2) appeared following his coronation to the King of Poland, which took place in 1076.
