Ostrów Lednicki – the biggest island on Lake Lednica – is the most significant location associated with the historical origins of the Polish state. From the second half of the tenth century to the first half of the eleventh century it hosted an extensive residential and political centre of the first Polish rulers: Mieszko I, Bolesław the Brave and Mieszko II. Within the fortified settlement, originally surrounded with very high walls, there are relics of the palatial buildings and the chapel with baptismal fonts, which have been preserved to the present times.
