Massacres in Piaśnica

Piaśnica is the site of the biggest act of genocide perpetrated by the Germans in the region of Pomerania. These mass executions of civilians took place in the early months of World War II and were among the first mass killings carried out on such a large scale in Europe. As part of the extermination actions “Tannenberg”, “Säuberungsaktion” and “Intelligenzaktion”, in the autumn of 1939 the Germans murdered about 30,000 people in the region of Pomerania. In the first phase, the policy adopted by the German occupier consisted in the extermination of Poles actively involved in developing Pomerania’s Polish identity and building the foundations of the Second Polish Republic.
